Empoli striker Nicolo Cambiaghi has singled out Juventus captain Danilo and Mlan star Fikayo Tomori as the best defenders in Serie A. In his recent interview with Radio TV Serie A, the Atalanta loanee opened up on the difficulties of scoring in Italy’s top flight.
“The league filled with strong defenders, above all Danilo and Tomori,” Cambiaghi said, as quoted by JuveNews. “Even in the smaller Serie A teams, you will find very strong defenders,” he concluded.
Danilo has been the cornerstone of Juventus’ backline since swapping Manchester City for the Allianz Stadium in 2019. His versatility has seen him perform as a right-back, which is his natural position, and a center-back in Massimiliano Allegri’s preferred 3-5-2 formation. He even scored against Cambiaghi’s Empoli in a 2-0 Serie A win last month.
On the other hand, Tomori has gone from strength to strength at Milan following his arrival from Chelsea in January 2021. His rise to stardom in Serie A has earned him a long-awaited return to the England national team. The 25-year-old was in the starting lineup as Gareth Southgate’s men squeezed past Australia in a friendly on Friday.
As for Cambiaghi, he enjoyed an impressive breakthrough Serie A campaign last term. However, as the team’s performances dwindled in 2023/24, so did the 22-year-old’s output. He has yet to score in seven appearances for Empoli this season.
