Recent criticism over his lackluster form has not gone down well with talismanic Inter center-forward Lautaro Martinez. Caught in a fierce discussion with a fan on Instagram, the Argentina international lost his temper.
“Remember that I always give everything for Inter. Like the World Cup year, when I had a destroyed ankle,” Martinez replied in a heated exchange with a fan on social media.
“But while others were preparing for a great World Cup, I was always on the field and didn’t miss a single training session until the Champions League final. I played all the matches like that. Always remember this before reminding me who pays me.”
It’s been a disappointing season for the Inter superstar. He has failed to score in seven of his 11 Serie A appearances this term. That’s a significant markdown to a league-high 24 goals in the club’s title-winning 2023/24 campaign.
However, Inter have immensely profited from Martinez’s goals. After a match-winning brace at Udinese, the 27-year-old netted decisive goals in a pair of 1-0 victories against Roma and Venezia. That’s still a far cry from his red-hot form last term.
Unfortunately for Inter supporters, Martinez’s partner, Marcus Thuram, has also stuttered after a sensational star. Thuram’s form has fallen off the cliff, resulting in Inter’s difficulty in the final third.
Indeed, Inter have failed to score more than once in three consecutive matches across all competitions, including a 1-1 home league draw against Napoli last time out.
