Inter CEO Beppe Marotta Reveals ‘Bitter’ Champions League Re-Draw

The Champions League knockout draw was re-held due to significant irregularities in the initial draw that had seen Manchester United first being drawn against Villareal (both being in the same group), before the Red Devils were entirely excluded from the choice of opponents against Atletico Madrid, who they eventually drew in the re-draw.

The Nerazzurri had first drawn Ajax as their Round of 16 rivals, before being pitted against heavyweights Liverpool in the second draw.

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has revealed his frustration on the incompetency of UEFA, but has also said that he respects the rules and that the club never considered trying to overturn the final draw.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Gazzetta Sports Awards (via TUTTOmercatoweb), Marotta shed light on the chaotic events surrounding the Round of 16 draw held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

“Regarding the draw, it left a bad taste, that’s for sure. I don’t want to go too far because we respect the rules, but the bitterness is deep,” he explained.

When quizzed whether the club considered appealing the draw, Marotta said: “No, we didn’t think about it.”

Liverpool are one of the favourites to grab the continental title this season, posing a great threat to the Nerazzurri’s hopes of making it to the quarter-finals.
