Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has revealed the club’s plan to tie headline performer Lautaro Martinez down to a new long-term contract. In a recent interview, he underlined the Italian heavyweights’ ambition to keep hold of the free-scoring Argentine forward.
“We’re absolutely very keen on extending his deal and investing in Lautaro as a key player. He’s considered our present and future,” the Inter chief said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “We’ll do our best to get Lautaro’s new deal signed as soon as possible.”
Given Martinez’s mouth-watering scoring exploits since arriving from Racing Club in 2018, it’s barely a surprise Inter are hellbent on extending his stay at Giuseppe Meazza. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a blistering start to the season, racking up an eye-catching 11 goals and two assists across ten appearances in all competitions.
Martinez spearheaded Nerazzurri’s title charge under Antonio Conte in 2020/21, forging a formidable attacking partnership with Romelu Lukaku. Last season, he finished second in the Serie A scoring charts behind Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. However, the Inter stalwart seems on course to capture the Capocannoniere award this term.
His current deal at Inter runs out in 2026. It puts the Italians in a strong bargaining position heading into the summer transfer window. But Marotta doesn’t want to take any chances. Several top European clubs, including La Liga title holders Barcelona, have been on Martinez’s trail in recent years.
Luckily for Inter, Martinez has never shown ambition to leave Meazza.
