Inter Star Henrikh Mkhitaryan Delivers Verdict on Fiorentina Loss

Inter playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan has accepted his share of the blame for the Nerazzurri’s woeful 1-0 home loss to Fiorentina on Saturday evening. Speaking to InterTV in the aftermath, the former Armenia international delivered his honest assessment of another below-par performance from Simone Inzaghi’s side.

Romelu Lukaku’s unfathomable miss immediately after the interval will make the headlines for all the wrong reasons. His amateur reaction came back to haunt Inter. Instead of going 1-0 up, they found themselves on the back foot minutes after and never found a way back into the match.

But it wasn’t just Lukaku. Mkhitaryan had a superb chance to fire Inter in front midway through the first half. However, despite demonstrating impressive technique to escape his markers, a wayward finishing touch let him down. And it seems the former Roma forward could lose a fair amount of sleep over his frustrating miss.

I feel guilty after missing the chance that I had,” he admitted after the match. “I’m very sorry about the final result. We conceded, and then we didn’t create many chances to equalize.

Ex-Milan midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura was on the scoresheet early in the second half as Fiorentina stunned Inter, posting their first Serie A win over the Nerazzurri since 2017. And while Vincenzo Italiano navigated his side to a fifth straight league win for the first time in charge of La Viola, Inzaghi might not stay at Giuseppe Meazza for long.

After losing three top-flight matches on the trot for the first time since 2017, Inter could fall out of the top four by the end of this round. Inzaghi has grown into a highly unpopular figure among the club’s fanbase, as Mkhitaryan lamented a lack of ‘calmness,’ which is often the manager’s fault.

I think it’s a psychological problem for us,” he added. “We want to get the goal too much, and then we lose concentration. We lack calmness. In my opinion we have such an intense desire to score and we end up making mistakes there.
