Italian Heavyweights Napoli and Milan Take Interest in Newcastle Stopper

Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar is on the verge of a contract expiration come January and several top Italian heavyweights are reportedly interested in the soon-to-be free agent. The Swiss defender has been with the Magpies since 2018 after a disappointing one-season spell at Deportivo La Coruna.

The 30-year-old is on the transfer wishlist of Scudetto contenders Milan and Napoli, according to latest reports from British outlet Daily Mail. He is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club of his choice, given there are only four months until the end of the season. The Swiss international is an integral part of Eddie Howe’s new look Newcastle and it remains to be seen what his stance is, given the club’s interest in other centre-backs such as Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

Newcastle are interested in offering a two-year extension on his contract but the situation remains unclear between the two parties.

Both the Azzurri clubs are face a threat on their backline – Milan with the absence of Kjaer’s injury and Alessio Romagnoli’s strong links with Lazio, and Napoli’s Koulibaly attracting the attention of several heavyweights such as Manchester United and Barcelona. Schar’s longstanding history at the top level coupled with his four-year running Premier League experience makes him an ideal candidate for a short-term acquisition.

The Switzerland native has been extremely instrumental in Newcastle’s undefeated form in the new year, having not lost since the 4-0 drubbing at the last of Manchester City.

Napoli and Milan are not the only two suitors in pursuit of his services. Spanish giants Valencia and Sevilla are also said to be interested in signing him.
