Lautaro Martinez Urges Inter to Put Atalanta Draw Behind

Inter and Atalanta played out an enthralling 2-2 draw at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday in a match jammed-full of twists and turns. Quicksilver forward Lautaro Martinez, who broke the deadlock, has urged the Nerazzurri to keep working after ‘falling to see out the match.’

Martinez hammered home a stunning volley to put Inter in front just five minutes into the game, but Atalanta responded in emphatic fashion before half-time. Ruslan Malinovsky restored the stalemate on the hour mark before Rafel Toloi completed the turnaround with seven minutes left to go in the first half.

Simone Inzaghi’s side dominated possession and managed to keep Atalanta deep inside their own territory for most of the second half. Inter’s unrelenting efforts to fight their way back into the match paid off in the 71st minute when Edin Dzeko latched onto a rebound to draw the Nerazzurri level.

Inter had a golden opportunity to regain the lead. However, Federico Dimarco hit the crossbar from the spot-kick in the 86th minute. The versatile defender’s miss nearly came back to haunt his side, but the VAR disallowed Roberto Piccoli’s 88th-minute goal.

Martinez, who left the fray in favor of Alexis Sanchez five minutes ahead of Inter’s penalty, has urged his teammates to put this result behind and continue to work hard.

I’m happy for my goal, but we couldn’t see this match out so we have to work and keep growing because we were ahead at home, but we couldn’t hold onto a lead. It means we have to keep working,” the Argentine said, as cited by SempreInter.

Now head to face Shakhtar in the Champions League, they too are tough. We have to prepare, recover and think about the next team we meet.

The way the game went, I would say the point was earned, but we wanted to win the game.”
