Lecce On the Cusp of Signing Seasoned Serie A Campaigner

It seems that adding 13 new players to Roberto D’Aversa’s squad in the summer hasn’t been enough to satisfy ambitious Lecce CEO Pantaleo Corvino. According to Gazzetta dello SportGiallorossi will complete another signing almost a fortnight after the Italian transfer window closure.

Nicola Sansone is reportedly on the verge of penning a two-year contract at the Stadio Via del Mare. The 31-year-old attacking midfielder will touch down in Puglia on Sunday before undergoing a medical the next day. If everything goes as planned, the skilled playmaker will become the new Lecce player on Monday.

Sansone learned his trade at the Bayern Munich youth academy. But after failing to make a single senior appearance for the perennial Germany champions, he moved back to Italy in 2011 to join Parma. Except for a mixed three-year stint at Villarreal between 2016 and 2019, he has spent most of his professional career in Serie A.

He was under contract at Bologna for four years. However, Thiago Motta’s men severed ties with him last June. Having found genuine proposals at a premium during the summer, Sansone is now ready to team up with Lecce as a free agent.

D’Aversa’s men have established themselves as an early Serie A season surprise package. As one of only four sides to have gone unbeaten in the opening three rounds, Lecce headed into September’s international break on the back of a 2-0 home win over Salernitana.

Sansone could be a massive coup for Lecce. In his 246 Serie A outings, he has mustered 39 goals and 40 assists.
