Milan Legend Baresi Opines on Best Defender Currently

Legendary Milan defender and current honorary vice president Franco Baresi has been left impressed by the Rossoneri’s development in recent times.

Widely regarded as one of not only Milan’s greatest ever, but also one of the best ever to play the sport, Baresi spoke to British outlet The Guardian in an exclusive interview and gave his thoughts on a multitude of topics, including who he feels are the best defenders in the world today.

On the ‘Immortal’ Milan of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s: “I played with that group for ten years, we found ourselves with our eyes closed. That was our strength. Each of us knew exactly what the others were doing at all times. It was a relationship that went beyond field, we were friends. Even now we see each other regularly. Sometimes we still play together? I had to stop because I have pain in my knee, the same one I injured in 1994.”

On the best defenders presently: “Surely van Dijk and Marquinhos, but also Tomori. He came from England and did very well, establishing himself in a different league. He impressed me with his physicality, his speed and his intensity. He can still grow, but obviously is already doing very well.”

On this season’s Scudetto race: “The team is playing beautiful football. They must be ambitious. Why not? To date, Milan is the team that plays the best football in Italy, the team that creates more chances, so we can certainly think in The season is obviously still long, but for now Milan are the team that has impressed me the most.”

Milan are currently joint-top of Serie A, alongside Napoli, with 32 points. Inter trail the unbeaten duo by seven points.in third place.
