One of Italy’s heroes at Wembley, Leonardo Bonucci, couldn’t control emotions following a penalty shoot-out triumph over England in the Euro 2020 grand final. The Juventus center-back took one of the side-pitch cameras and screamed “It’s coming to Rome,” alluding to the Three Lions’ “It’s Coming Home” chant.
In addition to displaying a masterclass defensive performance alongside his long-term partner Giorgio Chiellini, Bonucci came under the spotlight with the 67th-minute equalizer. Though England got off to a flying start through Luke Shaw’s 2nd-minute opener, Italy picked themselves up to come out on top of a high-octane final in London.
And Bonucci was central to Italy’s breathtaking comeback in both regulation time and penalties. After getting his side back on level terms in the second half, the experienced defender took responsibility in the penalty shoot-out following Andrea Belotti’s miss and hammered the ball home.
Bonucci’s strike from the spot sparked hope within the Italy camp before Gianluigi Donnarumma’s heroics in the final two series. Belotti and Jorginho both saw their penalties saved by Jordan Pickford. But Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka missed for England to propel the Azzurri to massive success at Euro 2020.
During his side’s ecstatic celebrations, Bonucci couldn’t help himself as he took a dig at England. The 34-year-old took the opportunity to vent a month-long worth of annoyance having to listen to the England supporters shouting “It’s Coming Home” time and time again.
With the Euro 2020 heading to the Apennines, Bonucci sent a clear message to everyone behind the screens having screamed “It’s Coming to Rome” to the cameras.
