Longtime Mancini Assistant Sheds Light on Italy Exit

Alberico Evani didn’t follow Roberto Mancini to Saudi Arabia, even though the two collaborated for a few years. He spoke about the former Italy coach’s departure to TMW Radio.

“I’ve been with the Federation for 12 years. Coach Arrigo Sacchi brought me in when he was the head of the youth sector. I began with the U-18 team. We did a good job. There are a few talents. We need to give them space and trust.”

“I’ve yet to understand fully what happened. President Gabriele Gravina wanted to make some changes, which is within his rights. I understand, but the timing was off. In normal circumstances, it’s up to the gaffer to pick his staff. I didn’t go to Saudi Arabia because I didn’t want turn my life upside down.”

Evani stated that the passing of Gianluca Vialli might have accelerated things.

“Maybe. If he was there, perhaps we would have continued like before, which would have been the right thing to do. It was a big loss for everybody. He could have been able to fix things. I think the staff was close-knit as we had been friends for a long time. That was our strength, and we conveyed it to the squad too. We weren’t the best, but we had a great team spirit. That’s why we were unbeatable. Then, something came undone, and we ran into trouble. I back his choice. The time wasn’t right, but the reasons were.”
