Meret Warns Napoli of Complacency Ahead of Frankfurt Visit

Napoli keeper Alex Meret had a relatively comfortable evening at Deutsche Bank Park, as his side beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the Champions League last 16 first leg. However, he has warned his side of complacency ahead of the second leg back in Naples in three weeks’ time.

The Italian shotstopper shared his thoughts in the mixed zone after the victory yesterday.

“We have to think match by match as we always have, this year is bearing great fruit. Today was a good performance. This season we are demonstrating great solidity and concreteness. There is determination on everyone’s part. We like to offer play and have ball possession; we must continue to do what suits us asking the coach. We work with the right mentality, without conceding anything.” (via Tuttomercatoweb)

Meret warned his side of being complacent ahead of the return leg at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

“We mustn’t let our guard down, as I said before. We mustn’t think we already have qualification in our pocket. We have a two-goal lead, but if we don’t face the second leg with the right determination then it becomes difficult. Sometimes an episode can change a game and the season. We must always stay on track and concentrate.”

He then reserved some words of praise for the adoration from Napoli supporters this campaign.

“The fans have been pushing us since the beginning of the year in an incredible way. Even today there were many of them and they made themselves heard, despite the warm weather here. We hope that they will help us even more when we return and with a great performance we will go through.”

Napoli won an away match in the continental tournament’s knockout stages for the first time ever, having lost their previous three such games. Luciano Spalletti’s outfit has scored 22 goals so far, the most by an Italian club in a single UCL season since Juventus in 2016/17.
