Paulo Fonseca’s future at San Siro is on the line as Milan and Inter square off in a heavyweight Serie A showdown on Sunday night. Though it’s only the fifth round, the Portuguese manager’s career at the helm of the 19-time Italian champions has already reached a ‘make or break’ point.
Anything other than a win against the fiercest rivals would likely spell the end of Fonseca’s lackluster tenure at Milan. Following a disheartening 3-1 home loss to Liverpool on Tuesday, the ex-Roma coach has prepared one last ace up his sleeve to try and salvage his job.
Out-of-form Milan will reportedly line up in a 4-4-2 for the first time in a while, with Fonseca planning to pair Tammy Abraham with Alvaro Morata in the final third. Unless his latest tactical alteration pays off, the 51-year-old could start packing his bags.
According to Calciomercato, former Lazio chief of staff Maurizio Sarri has emerged as the club hierarchy’s ideal choice to replace Fonseca. The Italian veteran’s experience places him above Massimiliano Allegri and Edin Terzic in the pecking order.
In fact, Milan are so convinced Sarri is the perfect solution for their problems that they’ve already discarded the latter as an option. As for Allegri, his nightmare second stint at Juventus tarnished his legacy, raising questions over his ability to adapt to modern football.
Therefore, Sarri waits while Fonseca prays. Inter are in far better shape than Milan, meaning today could be Fonseca’s last act in the Rossoneri dugout.
