Milan have probed some options to add depth to their defense, but they might already have one in-house, Mattia Caldara. He last played for them in April 2019. His ensuing loan spells haven’t gone too well. He’s struggling to find suitors this summer.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Rossoneri are considering keeping him as their fifth center-back. He’d replace Mattia Gabbia, who transferred to Villarreal on loan. The veteran has just a year on his contract and earns €2M. He’d have to extend it to leave temporarily again. He was excluded from their American trip along with Divock Origi, Ante Rebic, Marko Lazetic, and Fode Ballo-Touré.
Caldara was derailed by major injuries in his first Milan stay. He had joined in a €35M deal involving Leonardo Bonucci. He partially tore his Achilles tendon and then ruptured his ACL in his first year at the club.
The defender starred for Venezia and Spezia in the past two years, collecting 52 appearances. The management will contemplate rescinding his contract if he doesn’t want to stay as a deep reserve and no team bids for him.
Our Take on Milan and Caldara
He was okay with the Lagunari but not so much with the Bianconeri, which moved on from him in the second half of last season. It’d be a rough spot for him, but they shouldn’t spend for such a minuscule role.
