Bayern Munich’s decision to put underperforming midfielder Marcel Sabitzer up for sale has reportedly put Milan on red alert. According to Calciomercato, the defending Serie A champions have been on their toes since the news of the Bavarians contemplating the Austrian’s departures surfaced in the media.
With Bayern on the verge of acquiring the services of Sabitzer’s former RB Leipzig teammate Konrad Laimer, the Austria international is facing an uncertain future at the Allianz Arena. After a series of uneventful performances in the first half of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, Julian Nagelsmann has deemed the 28-year-old surplus to requirements.
Laimer’s imminent arrival threatens to put the squeeze on Sabitzer’s playing time, forcing the midfielder to reassess his options. Despite focusing on extending the contracts of their vital first-team members, Milan could pounce for the out-of-favor Bayern man if the opportunity presents itself.
It’s not the first time Milan have been linked with Sabitzer, as they were on his track during his time at the Red Bull Arena. Stefano Pioli could use an additional option in the engine room. Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer have been in decent form this season, yet their recurring fitness problems have often tormented the Rossoneri boss.
However, apart from Milan, Juventus have also taken an interest in Sabitzer, particularly in light of Leandro Paredes’ sub-par showings in Serie A. No strangers to robbing top clubs of their second-fiddle stars, the record-time Italian champions could put Milan’s hopes of landing the deep-lying midfielder at risk.
