Milan to Reopen Talks for Ligue 1 Striker in January

After failing to sign an out-and-out striker during their free-spending recruitment campaign in the summer, Milan will make another attempt in January. According to CalciomercatoRossoneri sporting director Giorgio Furlani can try to use his ‘idyllic relationship’ with Lille to strike a pre-agreement over Jonathan David’s switch to Serie A.

Milan made numerous approaches to land a younger alternative to Olivier Giroud. But from Porto’s Mehdi Taremi to David himself, none of their attempts to find a deputy for the aging Frenchman came to fruition. Luka Jovic arrived at San Siro on the deadline day, though he’ll unlikely stay beyond next summer.

Stefano Pioli has relied on Noah Okafor to fill Giroud’s shoes in the early season. Despite joining the club as a winger, the Milan newcomer has excelled as a lone center-forward. After netting in back-to-back Serie A matches, including Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Lazio, he’s earned the benefit of the doubt.

However, the San Siro hierarchy appreciates David’s profile. Milan reportedly tabled a late bid for the Canada international in the summer. With the clock ticking down, Lille had no interest in selling their talismanic forward, knowing it would be impossible to replace him on such short notice.

David’s contract runs out in 2024. Since he’s rebuffed every attempt from the club to renew his deal, Les Dogues might be open to discussing his sale this winter. Milan chief Furlani is aware of the situation and is ready to reopen talks with the French side.
