On December 23, 2016, Doha hosted a pre-Christmas edition of the Italian Supercup as Milan beat Juventus on penalties. It was the first trophy that the Rossoneri conquered since five years. Juventus, on the other hand, were right in the middle of their nine-year Scudetto winning streak.
Milan were coached by Vincenzo Montella and had gained the right to play in the Supercup as they lost to Juventus in the Coppa Italia Final the previous season. The Bianconeri were already qualified as the Serie A title holders.
At the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Giorgio Chiellini opened the scoring for Juventus but Giacomo Bonaventura drew level for Milan on 38 minutes. The two sides could not be separated in either the regular and the extra times, so the Supercoppa was decided on penalties.
Gianluigi Buffon pushed back Gianluca Lapadula’s spot-kick but Mario Mandzukic’s shot crashed into the crossbar. In the end, it was a 17-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma to make a difference as he saved Paulo Dybala’s final conversion attempt.
With this win, Milan won the Italian Supercup for the seventh time, an all-time best together with Juventus.
