Owner De Laurentiis: “Napoli the Most Honest Team”

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis was in a chipper mood talking to the press ahead of the Champions League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt (via Il Mattino).

“Winning this competition would give us a global reputation that Naples already has since it’s a city that bests all the other ones. The fans are always right, but they have to be wary because they don’t know everything. They often play virtual football, and it’s fair for them to say whatever they want. We that are in the know are aware of how it really operates. I had stated that we would compete for the Scudetto on May 30th.”

The chairman dished on Luciano Spalletti, who was dubious about his statement at the time.

“It’s impossible to demand that coaches know all the players in the world. They don’t pay attention to the transfer market. Their job is to manage the team and, luckily, we have one that’s capable. It’s up to the front office to put together the transfers. We have no secrets, and we just need to have fun while playing. This is ultimately a game. I’m surprised to see how many are excited for us this season, but we have always been extremely competitive and especially the most honest.”

De Laurentiis recalled their chase of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

“We had already pursued him three years ago when he was 18. However, we had to wait due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the losses it caused. Eventually, we signed him for €10M, while they had asked for €30M in the past.”
