Politano Longing for Long-Term Contract with Napoli

While Napoli are struggling to come to terms with some cornerstones, Matteo Politano would like to tie himself down to the team long-term. He’s been very consistent so far this season. He has scored six times, as much as Victor Osimhen, and provided three assists, which is level with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the winger wishes to renew his contract, which expires in 2025. It doesn’t hurt that his girlfriend is from the area. The couple plots to set roots there.

Politano has thrived without having to compete with Hirving Lozano, who left Napoli to return to PSV last summer. His replacement, Jesper Lindstrom, has yet to get going, and the Italian winger’s displays haven’t helped him.

The 30-year-old is represented by Mario Giuffredi and earns €2.2M per year. He hasn’t renewed his deal since joining from Inter in January 2020, initially on loan. The Azzurri paid a total of €23.5M to purchase him. He has recorded 28 goals and 23 assists in 181 games in Campania.

Our Take on Politano

The other side of the coin of Lindstrom not getting minutes is that his rival has benefitted from the playing time and confidence standpoints. His salary is reasonable, but the Azzurri haven’t really been in the mood to do their veterans any favors economically.
