Roma and Mourinho Waging War on Italian Referees after Derby Loss

The bitter aftermath of the Derby della Capitale is still ongoing. José Mourinho slammed referee Marco Guida and VAR assistant Massimiliano Irrati. Roma were already irate beforehand because of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s red card versus Sassuolo.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the club is putting together a list of episodes to prove the repeated mistakes and unfair treatment they have been victims of. They believe there was a foul in the Lazio box by Elseid Hysaj on Nicolò Zaniolo at the beginning of the action that led to the second goal. Moreover, Lucas Leiva should have been sent off in the first half in their opinion.

The heads of the AIA, the referee’s association, did not appreciate the tirade of the Roma coach in the post-game. They considered it an “unacceptable show”  that must not happen again, Il Messaggero reports. Mourinho will be under heavy scrutiny in the upcoming matches. In any case, coordinator Gianluca Rocchi did not like how Guida handled the contest. He compensated for the early apparent errors against Roma with a weak PK in the second half.

The Giallorossi could have suffered an immediate retaliation from the sports justice. Nicolò Zaniolo was pictured making an obscene gesture towards Lazio fans that were teasing him after the final whistle. The federal inspectors took notice, and the sports judge levied a €10k fine. However, he did not suspend the attacker, which was a possibility with a strict and severe interpretation of the rules. Therefore, he will be available for the upcoming game between Roma and Empoli.
