Roma were able to spend big without major sales last summer and easily rebuffed any potential interest in one of their crown jewels, Mile Svilar. The Giallorossi will have to follow that up with a new contract, as he hasn’t gotten a new one since joining and eventually taking over the starting job at the expense of Rui Patricio.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the goalie has one of the lowest salaries in the squad, about €800k annually. The capital club onboarded him on a Bosman move from Benfica following a recommendation by José Mourinho. The shot-stopper had struggled to be a regular in Portugal.
Svilar started getting minutes in the Europa League in his first few months at Roma. Daniele De Rossi eventually made the switch in Serie A as well from February on. He has appeared in 37 matches with them, allowing 39 goals and keeping 13 clean sheets. He has one cap with Serbia, in a friendly, but chose to represent Belgium afterward. The 25-year-old hasn’t been selected by the Red Devils yet, though.
The brass will attempt to add a couple of more years to his present contract, which expires in 2027 and propose to double his wages.
Our Take on Roma and Svilar
They really found a diamond in the rough with him, and they better lock him up, as it’s not easy to find reliable and talented goalies for cheap. It’ll be interesting to see if his new deal will envisage a release clause, but they seem to have moved past their era where they necessarily needed to cash in on some players to fund their acquisitions.
