Andrea Belotti has waxed lyrical about Jose Mourinho after penning a two-year contract extension at Roma on Sunday. In an interview with the club’s website, the ex-Torino striker explained how the ‘Special One’ took the Giallorossi to the next level last season.
Following a memorable Europa Conference League success in 2021/22, Roma reached the Europa League final last season. But serial winners Sevilla got the better of Mourinho’s side after a nail-biting penalty shootout, inflicting the first loss on the Portuguese manager in a major European final.
On the other hand, Belotti barely enjoyed his maiden season at the Stadio Olimpico. The 29-year-old failed to get off the mark in 31 Serie A appearances for Roma. Despite scoring three times in 14 Europa League matches, the Italian led many to believe his career in Rome could halt after just one year.
However, Belotti’s endless work rate and unparalleled fighting spirit have not gone unnoticed by Mourinho. Impressed by the Italian forward’s commitment, the former Inter boss has urged Roma to reward him with a new two-year contract. Only time will tell whether that was the right choice.
But Belotti has relished the moment, taking the opportunity to show his gratitude to Mourinho. The pair has quickly developed a great relationship, as admitted by the striker.
“The coach’s recognition of my endeavors meant a tremendous amount to me because he truly realized the efforts I was making to help the team,” he said. “The hug we shared at the Olimpico when I came off against Inter is something I’ll remember forever because it was borne out of love and sincerity.
“I was proud of myself for the sacrifice I showed, and it also made me appreciate our coach even more because aside from all of the trophies he’s won there aren’t many people out there with Mourinho’s human touch.
“He’s a born winner. He hammers home the importance of succeeding and instills a winning mentality for every game. He’s also got a great rapport with the lads. When you think that you’ll give 100% he’s capable of extracting an additional 30% out of you. He’s able to push your limits pretty far.“
