Sampdoria Patron Attends Lazio Clash Despite Death Threats

Former Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has operated in the shadows in the recent past, but made a surprising appearance at the Stadio Olimpico just few days after receiving threats attached to a pig’s head at the club’s headquarters in Genoa. The patron made his first appearance in almost five months to witness his side swallow a 1-0 beating to Lazio following Luis Alberto’s belter in the final minutes.

In a shocking set of events on February 25, a box with a pig’s head was sent to Sampdoria’s HQ in Piazza Borgo Pila, threatening Ferrero and current vice-president Antonio Romei along with a note that mentioned: “Le prossime teste saranno le vostre,” meaning “The next heads will be yours.”

The club released a press note that very day, condemning the heinous act.

“UC Sampdoria expresses deep indignation and indignation in the face of the umpteenth serious act of intimidation that took place this morning at the company headquarters in Piazza Borgo Pila,” read the press release.

Despite stepping down in 2021 due to incriminating financial charges, Ferrero still controls Sampdoria via a family holding. It is presumed that fans are furious for his actions of running down the club’s finances and refusal to sell the club to potential owners who might save it from disastrous consequences.

The threat was received a week after Sampdoria’s 2-1 defeat to Bologna amid a sense of unrest among the club’s supporters, as their Serie A woes continue.

Sampdoria sit in 19th position with 11 points, six adrift of Hellas Verona and nine off the nearest safety place held by Spezia. If Dejan Stankovic’s men indeed get relegated, it will be their first demotion in 11 years.
