Sarri Shrugs Champions League Talk: “I Lost Serie A with 91 Points”

Lazio were held to a 1-1 draw by Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico, after Nicolas Gonzalez’s fantastic second-half curler cancelled Nicolo Casale’s ingenious 8th minute opener. Maurizio Sarri’s side failed to take the lead into second place above Inter, as they sit on 38 points alongside over fourth placed Atalanta.

Sarri is aiming for a Champions League finish, but speaking in his post-match press conference, he revealed a lack of confidence in Lazio’s chances given the uncertain nature of football.

“The average (points tally) is like the average chicken. If there is a chicken for 10 people and they eat it all, the nine others are still left hungry. You’re talking to someone who lost a championship with 91 points, it’s never happened. I don’t care much about the average.”

He further shed his opinion on the level of competitiveness in Serie A.

“The competition increases the performance of all the teams, then the scores depend on the salvation quota: on the basis the performance of the teams fighting for relegation raises or lowers the threshold. Each league has its own story.”

The draw against Fiorentina extends Lazio’s unbeaten streak to five competitive matches, although that will do little to improve the mood after they wasted the opportunity to take the second spot in the league.
