Serie A Icon Compares Osimhen and Vlahovic Ahead of Sunday Derby

Reigning Serie A champions Napoli are about to take on record-time champions Juventus in Sunday’s blockbuster in southern Italy. One of the main talking points is the duel between the two lethal goalscorers, Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic.

Serie A legend Luca Toni has drawn comparisons between the two strikers in the build-up to tonight’s match.

Osimhen was born in 1998. Vlahovic is actually two years younger. They are young and can still rise,” the former Juventus forward said, as quoted by TMW. “We’ll see what happens in the years to come. Vlahovic’s potential could, in my opinion, become even stronger than Victor’s.”

While Vlahovic’s career at Juventus hasn’t reached the promised heights yet, the Serbia international has recently shown glimpses of his potential. In fact, he’s the most prolific Serie A player in 2024 with nine goals, two of which arrived in a 3-2 home win against Frosinone last week.

Speaking of flashes of brilliance, Osimhen reminded Serie A of his ‘killer instincts’ in a 6-1 midweek triumph at Sassuolo. The Nigerian bagged a hat-trick in new manager Francesco Calzona’s first win in charge of Napoli. As such, both strikers will take the field in high spirits.

Vlahovic seems well-positioned to support Toni’s assessment, but his tendency to disappear from high-stakes match-ups could be a stumbling block. On the other hand, last season’s Serie A top goalscorer has had ups and downs this term.

However, Osimhen’s double in Napoli’s 5-1 thumping of Juventus in this fixture in 2023/24 stands as a warning for Massimiliano Allegri’s men not to take his form fluctuations for granted.
