Torino President Cairo on Transfer Strategy and Economic Standing

Torino president Urbano Cairo has defended the Granata signing Perr Schuurs to replace now Juventus stopper Gleison Bremer. Schuurs arrived from Ajax – having graduated through the Dutch club’s reserve side – sealing a €9M move to Torino last summer.

Speaking to GR Parlamento (via FCInterNews), the club chief shed light on what Bremer’s departure meant and how the Brazilian’s transfer has helped shape their strategy.

“If you keep Bremer, you don’t buy Schuurs. Yet he replaced him well. Or Praet and Miranchuk, Brekalo and Vlasic. It is difficult to keep everyone. They don’t come to be on the bench. A vote for our season? Before giving them the credit, let’s see the next twelve games which will be very important. Let’s wait, but it’s a positive vote (so far) because it’s nice that so many young players are growing up or players who in the past they hadn’t done well and are relaunching: for example, it’s a mix of young people aged 2000 and more experienced, who are always important in a team.

Cairo then disclosed the difficulties the Italian teams had been facing and Torino’s financial position.

“The Premier spends €900M because it has turnover values, television rights equal to almost 4B. We bill €1.2B and we have difficulties. We are returning from the two-year period of Covid which left balance sheets in difficult conditions. Between 2013 and 2017 we had good balance sheets, then in 20-21 we lost considerable figures, around €60M, which I would never have imagined. We had bought expensive players but with Covid there was a problem with closed stadiums and reduced sponsors, this has led to unthinkable situations. If we had the possibility of organizing the 2032 European Championships, it would be very important. Organizing these important events, as we saw in Turin in 2006 with the Olympics, gives a boost that is truly extremely important. The European Championships would boost the construction of new stadiums and this would benefit all of football,” concluded the president.

Torino continue their fight to secure European football, having registered successive clean-sheet wins since experiencing a 4-2 setback in the Derby della Mole against Juventus. However, they face Scudetto leaders Napoli next at the weekend.
