Napoli recently tasted their maiden defeat of the new season to Lazio, led by Maurizio Sarri, who was the coach under who Hamšík rose to prominence

Hamsik Reveals What Winning the Title Means for Napoli

Napoli icon Marek Hamsik believes Napoli truly deserve the Scudetto title, after what has been an excellent league season across all fronts, as the Partenopei sit a comfortable 17 points ahead of second-placed Lazio. Luciano Spalletti’s men are now just a few points away from clinching a historic Serie A championship.

The now Trabzonspor midfielder spoke to Il Mattino in an exclusive interview and couldn’t contain his excitement at seeing Napoli lift the coveted title after 33 years.

“I am proud. It is an immense joy, I think of the people there who asked me every year when I played to win this Scudetto. And now it is finally here. Many times, I imagined what this moment of immense joy for the city would feel like. Because I know how people live in Naples, I know what the club means for them. Every time I met the fans they would say: ‘We have to win the Scudetto’. It’s a dream come true for everyone.”

Hamsik reminisced their Coppa Italia victory in 2012 that ended a lengthy title drought.

“Napoli is a piece of me, this Scudetto is not mine but of those who fought and won it. I have experienced unforgettable celebrations, like when we won the domestic in 2012 after 22 years of not winning anything.”

The Slovakian then named one player, who in his opinion, has stood out this season.

“My MVP is Stanislav Lobotka, and certainly not because he is a Slovakian like me. His talent, his coolness, his qualities have made Napoli’s game take a leap forward.”

Hamsik shed light that the club contacted him when they first set sights on Lobotka when he was still playing at Celta Vigo.

“Napoli asked me what I thought when they started to negotiated to sign him. I didn’t hesitate to say yes because he is the solution to the regista problem. They listened to me and I’m happy. I hear from him and other teammates often. I know that it is a magical moment for them, and they they must enjoy to the fullest, also for those like us who have only came close it.”

Finally, he recalled his own journey with Napoli.

“I have no regrets. I did everything I could to win the Scudetto. I gave every ounce of my energy to win it in my 12 years, as did all my teammates. I carry the victories that gave us Champions League qualification in my heart. Lisstening to the that anthem at the San Paolo is bliss.”

Hamsik ended his Napoli career as the club’s highest-ever capped player, and also as one of the club’s most prolific goalscorers, with 121 goals in 520 appearances.
