Inter Outcast Linked with Winter Return to Empoli

Out-of-favor Inter midfielder Kristjan Asllani could be heading back to Empoli when the transfer window reopens for business in January. According to FCInterNews, the 21-year-old Albanian has grown tired of his sparse first-team opportunities at Giuseppe Meazza and is looking for a way out.

Asllani received several proposals during the summer. Sassuolo and Fiorentina were interested in luring him away from Inter but to no avail. La Viola made a last-gasp attempt to take the ex-Empoli man back to Tuscany on the deadline day, only to encounter the player’s rejection.

Due to his past links with Empoli, the deep-lying Inter playmaker refused a switch to the Stadio Artemio Franchi. On top of that, he found Sassuolo’s offer unconvincing and decided to stay and fight for his place in Simone Inzaghi’s set-up instead. That has proved a terrible choice thus far.

With Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Nicolo Barella, and Davide Frattesi ahead of him in the pecking order, Asllani has become a forgotten man at Inter. The early Serie A pacesetters wouldn’t mind cutting his loose this winter. The only uncertainty is whether they want to do it outright or send him out on loan.

There’s still plenty of time until the January transfer window. But Inter and Empoli can take advantage of Saturday’s showdown at the Stadio Carlo Castellani to lay the foundation for a potential deal. Asllani will unlikely have a chance to prove his worth against his former employers.
