Serie A has quickly adopted FIFA’s decision to allow players in Ukraine and Russia to transfer because of the ongoing war. Due to the extraordinary circumstances, the market will re-open on March 10th, although with multiple caveats.
The League will permit to modify the season-long lists freely while keeping the current numerical limits, Sky informs. It is allowed to register 25 players plus youngsters, and teams usually have open spots. Some changes are already possible under normal conditions.
On the other hand, Serie A will not waive their rule on extra-EU players, likely obstructing potential additions from Ukraine and Russia. Italian teams can sign just one per season, two if one of those they roster transfers abroad in the summer or in January. Clubs have generally filled their quota at this point of the season. Although, there are some exceptions, like Inter, Juventus, and Atalanta.
FIFA ruled that footballers can move by April 7th and basically on loan. The contracts of foreigners from the two countries in question are suspended, not voided. They will head back to their current club on June 30th. There can not be longer agreements at this stage. However, the international federation could revisit such stance later on.
Atalanta could try to use the situation to address their offensive woes. Duvan Zapata is likely to be on the mend for months and Luis Muriel is struggling. The Orobici are considering pursuing Shakhtar Donetsk’s striker Fernando, Prima Bergamo informs. He has bagged 8 goals in 14 appearances this season.
