Batistuta Talks Napoli Charge, Roma Memories and Potential Italy Return

Argentine legend Gabriel Batistuta believes Napoli will go on to lift the Scudetto title at the end of the season, given they ‘deserve’ the trophy for the first time since the 1989/90 season. The former Fiorentina icon also paid heed to Roma, where he spent the latter years of his career – even winning the Serie A once with the Giallorossi.

Speaking to DAZN (via VoceGiallorossa), Batigol was full of praise for the Partenopei’s Scudetto charge, citing their lead at the top of the table as unassailable.

“According to me, Napoli will win. I cheer for them, because I think they deserve it. They have been trying for 7-8 years, coming close but never been able to win it. This year I see them more convinced. The advantage is important and I don’t think the others can take the lead back from the blues.”

He commented on Jose Mourinho’s Roma, going on to reminisce his time at the club two decades ago.

“I see them play sometimes. The coach instilled enthusiasm in the fans. My relationship with Rome is beautiful, we were a huge team and the fans still love me. There was a desire to win, and the victory of Lazio the year before (1999/2000) gave us an extra boost. I managed to take what I had been looking for for 10 years, I have a beautiful memory and I must say that the year we won the championship, I had a hard time leaving the club. The experience was beautiful.”

Batistuta also spoke of the recent deaths of Serie A icons Sinisa Mihajlovic and Gianluca Vialli.

“I want to honor Sinisa and Gianluca, two examples for many generations. Examples of desire, of struggle. They showed that great things can be done by always behaving well. We have never been friends but I have always admired and respected them.”

Finally, he disclosed of a potential return to Italy in the near future.

“I love Italy, I have to confess it, I feel at home there. I took the coaching course but I see myself more as a manager and I take this opportunity to launch an appeal. I think I’m prepared but I don’t need to take the first thing that happens to me. If a stimulating project arrives, I will say yes.”
