Bologna Officially Dismiss Mihajlovic After Slow Start

Following the recent rumors, Bologna have indeed fired Sinisa Mihajlovic following their poor start. The Rossoblù have collected three points in the first five matches, losing against Lazio and Milan and drawing with Verona, Salernitana, and Spezia.

The Serbian coach leaves the club after three and a half years. They have never been at serious risk of getting relegated during his tenure. They have finished 12th twice, tenth in his maiden campaign and 13th in 2021/2022. He has collected 47 wins, 46 draws, and 63 losses in 157 matches at the helm. He has battled leukemia in the last two years, missing remarkably little time given the circumstances.

As per La Gazzetta dello Sport, Thiago Motta is the frontrunner to replace Mihajlovic on the Bologna bench. He’s coming of a solid campaign where he avoided the drop amid various difficulties. Instead, Roberto De Zerbi is a long shot. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Claudio Ranieri and Paulo Sousa are on the early shortlist too. Primavera gaffer Luca Vigiani will take over while the brass negotiates with the next coach.

Our Take on Bologna Firing Mihajlovic

It sounds a lot like the management had decided in the summer and was just waiting for an excuse to pull the trigger. The team was overhauled, not to say gutted. While they have been underwhelming so far, he deserved more time to explore his new pieces. It would have been one thing if the ousting led to an elite option like De Zerbi, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The contractual talks with Motta generally dragged on in the past. It wouldn’t be surprising if they landed on somebody else.
