Buffon Dubious About Recent Sanction Against Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon went to bat for Juventus following the recent point deduction, raising questions about the nature of the punishment in an interview with La Stampa.

“You have to lean on the only positive aspect to make the best of the situation. They have nothing to lose now, and everything will be a bonus. They no longer face the pressure of staying close to Napoli and fighting for a Champions League berth. It lightens the burden.”

“I wait for justice to take its course. In the event of a second sentence in the span of 17 years, since Juventus are considered the power, my question is whether power is masochist or if it’s the opposition that tries to prevail.”

Buffon praised Andrea Agnelli despite his unceremonious exit.

“I base my judgement on what happened on the pitch, which is my world. His ten-year run is unrepeatable. It will take ages for somebody to match it.”

Juventus also received unexpected support from Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo, who commented to La Repubblica.

“My chagrin comes for the fact that it happened during the season and altered it. As for the rest, we are talking about alleged crimes and ongoing trials. My hope is that the sanction for the capital gains could be re-considered because it is asymmetric both in Europe and Italy.”

The Bianconeri will know the result of their appeal in April. Per Sportitalia, they are confident the CONI’s College of Guarantee will send the case back to the Court of Appeal to reduce the sanction because the motivations aren’t properly substantiated.
