Capello Invites Leao to Show Gratitude Toward Milan

Veteran coach Fabio Capello has urged Rafael Leao to sign an extension with Milan to reciprocate what the club gave him, differently from previous players that ultimately left. He talked to Tuttomercatoweb.

“He owes his growth to the team, and he has to show a little gratitude, which is what Gianluigi Donnarumma didn’t do. If that sentiment doesn’t exist anymore, then you can’t say anything. He has proven to be an important player. He didn’t perform freely in the World Cup, but when he had the opportunity, he displayed his quality, which he has yet to express fully.”

On top of Leao, Capello also dished on Mike Maignan and Charles De Ketelaere.

“The injury of the goalkeeper is a big blow for Milan. He’s a leader that conveys confidence. It’ll be a major absence. The calf is a tricky muscle. I experienced the same issue back in my day: it looked healthy, but then it hurt again. Let’s hope he’ll be ready for the first Champions League game. The Belgian has looked like a fish out of water. He’d like to do more, but his pace is too slow. You can’t play as you would like in such situation.”

According to TuttoSport, the Rossoneri will ramp up their efforts to re-up the contract of the Portuguese star shortly. He returned to Italy after the World Cup. They wish that, if they did come to terms with him, no other players would ask for a pay bump afterward, thus recognizing his role as a technical leader. They’ll soon meet lawyer Ted Dimvula and could offer up to €7M per year. Even without an agreement, a January sale isn’t in the cards.
