Tottenham have emerged as the frontrunners to acquire Gugliemo Vicario from Empoli. The goalkeeper had long been touted as Inter’s top target to replace André Onana should he be sold to a Premier League side. Instead, the Spurs muscled their way into the race with a sizeable offer.
Per SportMediaset, they put €20M on the table, which is close to the Azzurri’s 25M price tag. Some add-ons should close the narrow gap. The two sides have come to a verbal agreement. The Tuscan outfit is waiting for the offer to be formalized to accept it.
Vicario would succeed Hugo Lloris at Tottenham. The London club tried to convince Brentford to sell David Raya through multiple bids, but their efforts were in vain, TalkSport relays. Therefore, they turned their attention toward the Italian shot-stopper, who’s significantly cheaper.
The 26-year-old was a late bloomer and became a Serie A starter just two seasons ago when Empoli acquired him from Cagliari for €8.5M after he had shown promise while relieving Alessio Cragno for a handful of matches and in previous campaigns in the lower leagues. He has been one of the most spectacular shot-stoppers in the Peninsula since then.

It’s a sound piece of business for all parties involved. He’s ready to man the sticks for a big team, and Empoli will cash in more than they would get from an Italian side, which would most likely try to insert makeweights or use less straightforward formulas.
