De Laurentiis Wants FIGC to Pay Up to Hire Spalletti

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is facing pressure concerning the clause that binds Luciano Spalletti but has no intention to budge. He penned a letter addressing the topic (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“I need to make some clarifications. I’ve always had great respect for the national team and, since I was young, it was the only outfit I was passionate about other than Napoli.”

“Despite having a year on his contract with us, Spalletti, after winning the title, voiced his desire to take a year off because he was very tired. Out of respect for his work, I didn’t blink, even though I could have asked him to respect it. Instead, I gave him the chance to rest. Listening to the fans, I asked for guarantees about his sabbatical, inserting a penalty if he changed his mind.”

De Laurentiis torched the Federation while addressing Spalletti and the issue at hand.

“It’s surprising for a coach to resign a few weeks before very important matches. It means that the body can’t mantain a relationship with its collaborators, forcing them to step down, or there are inadequate legal instruments to keep them.”

“The FIGC has rightly chosen Spalletti, offering him a three-year contract with €3M wages. They can’t stop in front of €1M annual disbursement. It’s incoherent. It’s a matter of principles tied not only to Napoli but the whole Italian football, which has to step out its amateurish attitude and tackle the challenges respecting the rules of the market.”
