Guendouzi Stresses Sarri Influence in Lazio Decision

Matteo Guendouzi joined Lazio last summer after a protracted negotiation with Olympique Marseille. However, he disclosed that his choice was clear from the get-go in an exclusive with Il Messaggero (via Fantacalcio).

“It’s true that it took a while to define everything, but I only had the Biancocelesti in mind. I was serene and certain that nothing would stop me from coming here. I had offers from the Premier League, but I picked a serious project and a club that won a lot in Italy and Europe and aims to grow thanks to the Champions League.”

Guendouzi stated that Maurizio Sarri was instrumental in his decision.

“He wanted me and stated he would help me improve further. I was already enticed by the idea of moving to Serie A. I faced him four times in England. He bewitched me for his offensive strategy, as midfielders have freedom too. I still have to learn many new schemes, but he has a winning mentality.”

Guendouzi wishes for a bigger role than in some of his previous stops.

“Things didn’t go well with coaches Mickael Landreau and Mikel Arteta in the past. I played under them too but then they took different paths. My character allowed me to become a footballer, move here, and get called up by France. I’ve changed a little and learned from my youthful mistakes. I’m less impulsive and more of a grown man.”
