Inter Currently Seen as Frontrunners for Roma Veteran

Inter were recently offered Henrikh Mkhitaryan by his agents. They quickly followed it up with a competitive contract offer. Roma trail in the race despite José Mourinho’s plea to keep the veteran, who had a large role during the season.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Nerazzurri have proposed a two-year contract with €3.5M wages. They are presently outbidding the Giallorossi. If their rivals do not respond, they will quickly set up the medicals ahead of the signing. While such step is generally routine, it will be meaningful in this instance. The 33-year-old returned after a month-long absence in the European Conference final. However, had to bow out very early due to an apparent relapse of a thigh strain.

Inter are keen on Mkhitaryan especially because of his versatility. He earned €5M in 2021-2022, and Roma wished to retain him at a lower rate. Mourinho and CEO Tiago Pinto expressed confidence he would stay, but they will have to raise their offer.

Our Take on Inter and Roma Dueling for Mkhitaryan

It would be a typical astute signing by Giuseppe Marotta considering their limited resources. Mkhitaryan proved to be useful and effective as a pure midfielder in 2021-2022, and Inter severely lack creativity behind their starting trio. Conversely, it would be stunning if Roma did not make an effort to keep him since he was a cornerstone of their formation and also one of their most consistent players in the recent campaign. Moreover, they have plenty of question marks in the role.
