Robin Gosens received an offer from Newcastle before joining Inter. However, the Nerazzurri swooped in while he was mulling over it. He quickly made up his mind.
He addressed the proposal by the Magpies to an interview with Kicker: “I thought about it, but I never really considered transferring there. I think it was natural to look at it. I would have had the chance to earn a lot more for doing the same job, just in a different place. It would be hard to find somebody that would have rejected it right away. It was not just about me, as I could have sustained multiple generations with that kind of money.”
Gosens revealed while he ultimately turned down Newcastle: “When I have to make a decision, I always put together a list of pros and cons. Going to the Premier League and the salary fell in the first category. However, there were too many disadvantages. I would have jeopardized my goals. I want to get the best I can out of my career, and I felt like I would not have been able to achieve that there. It is not all about the money for me, as I am still a little romantic. I hope we can stop this repulsive trend, even though I personally benefit from it.”
Gosens is delighted for ending up at Inter following the Newcastle talks: “It was incredibly nice. Atalanta acquired me for €1M and sold me for a hefty sum. It was a win-win situation. They pursued me in 2020 already. I was sceptic at first, but my agent was very confident. Everything went down quickly. As far as the injury is concerned, I will take further tests and hopefully gradually re-join the rest of the group next week.”
