Inter Stuck in Transfer Limbo as Joaquin Correa Refuses to Leave

Joaquin Correa’s reluctance to leave has become a big-time problem for Inter heading into the transfer window finale. Calciomercato’s recent update has taken stock of the Argentine’s future at Giuseppe Meazza and his influence on the club’s transfer policy.

Correa returned to Inter at the start of the summer after experiencing a woeful loan spell at Olympique Marseille. Despite his underwhelming showings in Ligue 1, the 29-year-old still drew some inquiries in the opening days of the transfer window.

AEK Athens, Besiktas, and several Saudi Pro League clubs had contacted Inter about Correa’s availability. However, the player turned down those approaches, insisting on his ambition to continue playing at a top level. Another hypothesis emerged in mid-July when Lazio entered the frame.

Searching for Ciro Immobile’s successor, Claudio Lotito asked Inter to re-sign Correa. Though the Nerazzurri were open to letting their flop return to the Stadio Olimpico on a cut-price deal, the forward’s €4 million wage request deterred the Biancocelesti from concretizing their interest.

With the list of suitors dwindling, Inter risk getting stuck with Correa for another season. His contract at Giuseppe Meazza runs out in 2025, meaning the reigning Serie A holders could lose the player they paid around €20m three years ago on a free transfer.

More importantly, Correa’s unwillingness to leave means Inter cannot add to Simone Inzaghi’s attacking options this summer. Genoa could be Inter’s last chance to offload the troubled forward. After selling Mateo Retegui to Atalanta, the Griffins have reportedly set their sights on Correa.
