Napoli winger Matteo Politano laid the groundwork for a dominant 2-0 home triumph against Monza at the Diego Maradona Stadium. The 31-year-old opened the scoring before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sealed the deal midway through the first half.
Politano made his 200th appearance for Napoli in midweek Coppa Italia action. He could find the net in a 5-0 rout of second-tier Palermo, but he returned to the scoresheet against Monza. The former Inter forward scored his first goal of the season with an instinctive finish.
Italy gaffer Luciano Spalletti was in the stands and had plenty to see. Politano wasn’t among the Napoli players to make the national team squad in September. Alessandro Buongiorno, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, and Giacomo Raspadori were on Spalletti’s list.
However, the long-serving Napoli stalwart believes he can reunite with his clubmates in the Italy camp next month. Politano has confirmed his intention to return to the Azzurri squad.
“That is my objective, to get back into the Italy squad. All I can do is give my best for Napoli and then the coach will decide,” he said after the game, as reported by CalcioNapoli24.
Politano also touched on the victory that fired Napoli to the top of the Serie A standings.
“We knew the importance of this game and wanted the win at all costs to keep the consistency going,” he stated.
Napoli will return to action next weekend for their last league outing before the international break as they meet resurgent Como on home turf.
