After a long negotiation, Serie A clubs have decided to confirm the status quo regarding TV rights, accepting an offer from DAZN and Sky that would see it earn €900M annually for the next five seasons. The sum could go up through a revenue share with the former should the subscriptions go well, Corriere della Sera informs.
The proposal received 17 out of 20 votes in the assembly. Salernitana and Cagliari were the only ones against it, while Napoli abstained. Aurelio De Laurentiis was non-pleased with the outcome (via Goal).
“An entrepreneur has to be able to measure the risk. If you try to save, you’ll never find out the value of Italian football, which goes through important investments. Unfortunately, it’s commonly believed that Calcio has to be supported by others, while its fans are enough. The relationship must be direct, not through the broadcasters.”
“DAZN and Sky are incompetent and don’t operate for the good of Italian football. It’s going to die with this deal. They sell it along with other products, so it’s impossible to gauge its value. The other presidents love to be passive actors in this sector, but I’ve never been that.”
Serie A will take a small financial hit relative to the previous three-year cycle. The alternative would have been creating a private channel and distributing it to the public, taking on all the entrepreneurial risk.
