Mateo Retegui was called up to the Italy national team by Roberto Mancini, and the ex-Inter and Manchester City manager’s sudden farewell has caught many by surprise, including the Azzurri newcomer.
Retegui spoke to Calciomercato–L’Originale (via Sky Italia) in an exclusive, revealing his shock at Mancini’s exit from the national team after five years at the helm.
“His decision surprised me. When I found out, I sent the coach a message, thanking him for the trust and for the opportunity he gave me to wear the national team shirt. For me it was an honor, he immediately made me feel at home along with his staff and my companions. He told me to score many goals with Genoa. But before arriving I hadn’t spoken to him about the transfer, only with Alberto Gilardino, who trusted me and was important in making my decision.”
According to the Genoa forward, there are two players who inspire him before retracing his unsuccessful negotiations with Inter.
“I like Harry Kane and Erling Haaland,” before continuing his talk about the Nerazzurri: “I’m not sure how it went, if my father took care of it, I was busy playing in Argentina and didn’t think about it.”
Genoa face Fiorentina on the opening matchday of the Serie A season, where an exciting face-off between Lucas Beltran and Retegui awaits.
“He’s a good player, but I don’t know him personally. Will we play together in national team? It would be nice, but it’s a decision he has to make with his family.”
