After their long-standing pursuit of West Ham’s Gianluca Scamacca came a cropper, Roma have turned to other targets to reinforce Jose Mourinho’s frontlines. According to Corriere dello Sport, Giallorossi have initiated talks with Bologna for aging striker Marko Arnautovic.
Scamacca was one of Mourinho’s top targets this summer. However, Roma couldn’t find common ground with West Ham. That opened the door for Atalanta to swoop in and steal the former Sassuolo man away. The 24-year-old touched down in Italy yesterday to complete his move to Bergamo.
In addition to the Scamacca fiasco, Roma have lost hope of capturing Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata. The Spaniard has recently denied rumors linking him with a transfer to the Stadio Olimpico. But despite suffering back-to-back blows, Giallorossi won’t reconcile with concluding a decent transfer window without a new striker.
Tammy Abraham’s ACL injury has left Roma with underperforming Andrea Belotti as the only center-forward option. Considering Il Gallo failed to score in Serie A in his first season at the club, it’s no wonder the beaten Europa League finalists are determined to revamp their options up front.
Left to lick his wounds, Mourinho has shifted his attention toward Arnautovic. Roma have tabled a meager €3.5 million bid for the 34-year-old veteran. However, Bologna are gunning for at least €10m following the Austrian’s impactful two years in Serie A.
Arnautovic bagged 14 league goals in his first campaign at Renato Dall’Ara in 2021/22. Despite several injury setbacks in 2022/23, he still hit a 10-goal landmark last term.
