Roma will try to bolster their defense after putting the finishing touches on the Artem Dovbyk coup and have earmarked Genoa’s Koni De Winter. He can play in two defensive roles as he has featured as a right-back in the past. The Giallorossi have been looking for a new contributor there for the entire window.
Per Sportitalia, the capital club lodged an initial inquiry for the youngster and didn’t go past that. The Grifone bought him out from Juventus for €8M last summer after a loan spell. He has 43 Serie A appearances to his name. The Old Lady signed him Zulte Waregem when he was very young. He has also starred for Empoli in the past.
Roma could concretely pursue De Winter especially for his versatility. They wanted a center-back earlier in the window and pursued Mats Hummels, but they couldn’t offload Chris Smalling and didn’t have room for another man in the same role.
Instead, the 22-year-old could simply be added to the mix to provide depth in a pair of positions. He debuted with Belgium last March but wasn’t called up for Euro 2024. He became a full-time starter once Genoa sold Radu Dragusin to Tottenham.
Our Take on Roma and De Winter
He’d be an interesting signing for most sides because of his quality, upside, and flexibility; plus, he already has decent experience and shouldn’t be too pricey. The Rossoblù have another talent waiting in the wings, Alessandro Marcandalli, if they decide to cash in. If used on the wing, he’d be able to balance out a very offensive contributor like Angelino on the other one.
