Free agent Matias Vecino is set to join Lazio this summer following his departure from Inter at the end of last season when his contract expired. The 30-year-old former Fiorentina man has suffered from a lack of game time in recent seasons, having registered just 31 appearances for the Nerazzurri in 2020/21 and 2021/22 combined.
According to latest reports from Sportitalia (via FCInterNews), the Uruguay international is poised to make the Biancocelesti his next club after receiving a contract proposal from their end. He will reportedly sign a three-year contract worth €2.5M net per season – considerably lowering than what he earned at Inter.
Talks between the player’s representatives and Lazio have intensified in recent days, with Lazio first offering €2M in net wages before increasing the proposal. Maurizio Sarri is keen on onboarding a central midfielder, and Vecino perfectly fits his requirements.
Moreover, the ex-Napoli coach remembers the 30-year-old fondly from their time together at Empoli during the 2014/15 season, where he was loaned out from Fiorentina. Vecino impressed then, garnering 2 goals in 38 uninterrupted appearances under the Italian tactician. Only an official agreement on paper is lacking from both parties at the moment, and it looks like the midfielder will possibly be Sarri’s final transfer this summer.
Our Take on Lazio Signing Vecino
With ample experience under his belt, Vecino is a worthwhile addition to the Biancocelesti ranks. The Uruguay center-half has always been on call, offering sturdy performances for Simone Inzaghi and Antonio Conte over the previous few seasons whenever required. His signing will make him the senior-most central midfielder in the club’s ranks.
