The celebrations in the streets of Naples continued all night long after the title-clinching game versus Udinese. A 26-year-old man, Vincenzo Costanzo, was killed by gunshots near Piazza Volturno. The investigators consider it a Camorra-related affair.
Prefect Claudio Palomba weighed into SkyTg24 and Radio Anch’Io (via Calcio e Finanza).
“It had absolutely nothing to do with football. We shouldn’t convey the wrong message. Somebody probably took advantage of what was going to settle a dispute.”
Per La Gazzetta dello Sport, the extensive festivities left 203 injured, nearly half of them seriously. Four persons had bullet wounds, and others had knife-related ones. Several got hurt mishandling fireworks, because they got trampled by the crowd or were involved in car or motorcycle accidents. A 19-year-old lost some phalanxes. A few received medical attention for panic attacks or asthmatic crises stemming from smoke bombs. Three policemen were assaulted. A 20-year-old girl was run over during the celebrations and is fighting for her life at the Frattamaggiore hospital because of a head trauma and brain hemorrhage.
Palomba minimized the tally.
“We aren’t nowhere near that number that’s being reportedly. Only select injuries were caused by fireworks. The fans were very responsible.”
There were tense scenes at the Dacia Arena right after the final whistle as well. The away fans that traveled to Friuli invaded the pitch. They were quickly forced to retreat on the stands as the local ones descended onto the field with evil intentions. The police forces intervened quickly, preventing rival ultras from coming to blows, Il Messaggero reports. Eight supporters were taken to the hospital.
