Di Canio: “Mourinho is Right to Feel Betrayed by Zaniolo”

Lazio icon Paolo Di Canio believes Nicolo Zaniolo is not grateful enough to coach Jose Mourinho despite the Special One doing all he can to protect the playmaker. Zaniolo is reportedly on the verge of an exit after five years at Roma, with Milan and Tottenham Hotspur the two main suitors vying over his signature.

Speaking to Sky Sport Club (via Corriere dello Sport), Di Canio responded to Mourinho’s comments following Roma’s 2-0 win over Spezia, where he admitted to his disappointment at Zaniolo’s wish to leave.

“Zaniolo has a problem of constantly being distracted by what happens on social media. Mourinho is right in feeling like he’s owed a bit of gratitude as he’s always protected Zaniolo no matter what. Mourinho is right to feel betrayed by Zaniolo after having protected him all the time.”

Di Canio feels Zaniolo will serve as a distraction at best if he ends up staying with the Giallorossi.

“Mou wants to win, and wants to qualify for Champions League football, but he knows that if Zaniolo ends up staying, he will have to take care of that situation first.”

Zaniolo was subject to boos at the Stadio Olimpico when Roma beat Genoa 1-0, and most recently asked to be excluded from the game against Spezia, further implicating his wish to part ways.
