Ancelotti Takes Stock of Betting Scandal: “Gambling is a Disease”

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has taken account of the illegal betting case that has rocked calcio, with several Italian stars such as Sandro Tonali, Nicolò Fagioli, and Nicolo Zaniolo all in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

Speaking on Rai Radio 1 (via TuttoNapoli), Ancelotti had a strong point to make regarding the scandal surrounding illegal gambling.

“It was a serious negligence on the part of these kids who entered this system and must be treated. On a scientific level, gambling addiction is a disease. Having said this, for me it is individual negligence, but involving all of Italian football seems to me a bit exaggerated. Justice will take its course, to me it seems like the carelessness of guys who have broken a fairly clear sporting rule: you can’t bet. For those who do this job, it’s very clear. You are warned that it is forbidden before each season in all countries.”

Ancelotti’s Real Madrid are one of the favorites this season to lift the UEFA Champions League, but he took stock of the Italian teams when asked which of them would reach the final.

“Reaching the Champions League final is difficult for everyone. Saying who gets to the final today is a lottery, the path is very long, it will be decided in five-six months, certainly not now. They certainly all have the possibility of getting through.”
