Christian Eriksen has been tied to Tottenham, Leicester and most recently Everton since the January window started, all teams looking to bring him back to Premier League on loan, however coach Antonio Conte forcefully stated that the player will stay at Inter because they are not planning to make any changes to the roster.
The Danish midfielder decided the Coppa Italia clash with Milan with a late free kick, bagging his first goal of the season. The gaffer commented to Rai Sport in the post-game: “I have been saying the same thing for a month, our squad is set, nobody will join and nobody will leave. Maybe you do not believe me, but this is the situation. We are working tactically to turn Christiano into an alternative in Marcelo Brozovic’s role. He is a quality player and he is part of our project. I asked for him to take that set piece, everybody loves him within the club and he is a proper kid. We want to hold onto him.”
Tottenham and Leicester had exploratory talks for him in previous weeks, hinging on the future of Dele Alli’s in the Spurs case, while the Foxes were not keen in absorbing his large salary. Yesterday Tuttomercatoweb reported that Everton had an initial approach and could make a late attempt if other situations develop in the next few days.
Our view
Despite Conte’s words, Eriksen could still leave Inter, but probably only if a club makes a real offer to buy him, allowing the Nerazzurri to recoup the investment, and not via loan. At this stage, nobody has made such proposal.
