Benfica president and ex-Milan star Rui Costa has backed his Portuguese outfit to overcome his former rivals Inter on the pitch. The duo faces each other in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the Stadio Meazza. Costa believes his team will give their all to overcome the 2-0 first-leg deficit.
Speaking to journalists before boarding the flight for Milan, the ex-trequartista shed light upon Benfica’s journey in the UCL, after what is their first loss of the continental tournament (via Calciomercato).
“We’re starting from a negative result, the first after 13 matches in the Champions League in which we achieved 10 wins and two draws, something unprecedented for the club. It was heavy given what happened on the pitch, but it is our obligation to fight until the last second and that is what we will do. I am fully aware that the team will do it.”
Costa thinks it is quite possible for the Eagles to make a comeback against an Inter side who have not conceded a single goal in four consecutive UCL knockout games – a club record.
“For Benfica, every match is the most important. Right now it’s the most important one because it’s what would allow us to move forward in the competition. We won’t throw in the towel and we will fight until the last second.”
Benfica remain without a victory against the Nerazzurri in European competitions so far, drawing one and losing three in the process.
